RSM Mayor Beall’s "Proud" Endorsement of Federal Terror
RANCHO SANTA MARGARITA, CA — A wave of community outrage is set to crash into the Rancho Santa Margarita City Council on January 28, following a chilling declaration by Mayor Tony Beall. During a recent public session, Beall discarded any pretense of neutral leadership to voice his "proud" support for the federal campaign of terror currently being waged on American streets by ICE and DHS.
The confrontation began when a resident requested a moment of silence for Renee Good, a 37-year-old bisexual woman, mother of three, and fellow American who was executed by federal agents in early January. Rather than acknowledging the brutal loss of a citizen's life, Beall used his platform to side with the shooters.
Listen to the Mayor's comments (Starts at 36:15).
The Execution of Renee Good
Renee Good, a poet who moved to Minneapolis with her wife, Becca, to find a "safe harbor" from political hostility, was acting as a legal observer to protect her neighbors when she was targeted.
According to harrowing eyewitness accounts, ICE agent Jonathan Ross fired three bullets into Renee’s face as she sat in her car, trying to move out of the way of agents. Her wife, Becca, whose visible queerness and refusal to be frightened triggered Ross to unholster his weapon, witnessed the murder firsthand, while the couple’s dog was in the backseat. In a move that has prompted mass resignations within the DOJ, the federal government has refused to investigate the killer, instead slandering the victim as a "terrorist" to cover up the execution. Let’s be clear - the federal government is lying.
Jackbooted Thugs Targeting the Queer Community
This isn't just happening in Minnesota. We are seeing a coordinated, violent campaign by jackbooted federal thugs right here in Orange County, specifically targeting visibly queer immigration justice activists after DHS scrapped civil rights guardrails protecting people based on sexual orientation and gender identity. This administration has labeled trans and queer activists as “domestic terrorists” - and they are using the intersection of gender and immigration justice to strike terror into our intersectional communities.
On January 9, during a protest in Santa Ana, federal agents shot 21-year-old Kaden Rummler, a trans man, in the face at close range. The “less than lethal” rubber bullet projectile fractured Kaden's skull and permanently blinded him in one eye. After the shot, agents were filmed dragging Kaden’s bloodied body by his shirt collar across the concrete while mocking his injuries.
Visible queer activist and U.S. citizen Anna Brauch was also recently violently detained by ICE. Despite never being charged with a crime, Brauch emerged from federal custody with multiple broken bones, another victim of a system that now views queer identity as a justification for brutality.
Tony Beall’s Legacy of Exclusion
For those who have followed Beall’s 20-year career, his "proud" endorsement of federal violence is no surprise. He has long used his office to marginalize those who don't fit his "traditional" vision for RSM:
Youth Under Attack: Beall is currently moving to cancel city contracts with the Boys & Girls Club because he considers their diversity and equity programs "toxic."
Ethics Failures: He has a history of fines from the FPPC for campaign finance violations.
Call to Action: Silence is Death
When the Mayor of our city "proudly" supports an agency that fires bullets into the faces of bisexual mothers and blinds trans students, he is signaling that the "safety" of RSM does not apply to the LGBTQ+ community - or, obviously, the people of color who have long been hunted by ICE.
We must show up. We must tell this council that we will not be the "friends" whose silence Dr. King warned about.
